Donor Selection Services

Additional Services

Photo matching:

Donors can be selected based on how closely they resemble another person. A member of our staff reviews adult photographs of our donors, not available to the public, and will make the comparisons you request. If you are interested in using this service, please complete the Photo Assisted Donor Selection Request Form and e mail or mail to Fairfax Cryobank with color photographs of the individual you would like to see matched. Just download the form, fill it in and return a scanned document with photos via e mail (cryobank@givf.com) or mail it to us. See the form for full details.

Donor Selection Consultation:

Fairfax Cryobank provides an in depth counseling service for patients who need assistance in selecting a donor. Our knowledgeable Patient Consultants are prepared to help you select your donor based on the traits you feel are most important. To schedule a consultation, please contact our customer service department.

Genetic Counseling:

Some of our clients may have special circumstances that require them to select donors tested for a specific genetic disease that runs in their family or simply to gather more information about a genetic or hereditary situation. Help is available from our genetic counseling staff. Consultations by appointment are available.

Choose Now; Use Later:

We offer two ways to make the process easier for you. Vial Buy & Store allows you to find the right donor now. If your procedure date is still off in the future, you can  purchase specimens and have them stored. They will be there when you need them. Since donors can sell out at any time, avoiding this potential frustration makes sense. If at a later time, you find that some donor vials you've stored are no longer needed, we will buy back, at half price, any specimens that have not left our facility. (See out Vial Buy Back program)

2nd Child by the Same Donor:

Fairfax Cryobank strives to offer donor sperm to individuals who desire to have additional children by the same donor. However, individuals who wait until the time to conceive a second child may find that the specific donor they desire is no longer available.   Therefore we suggest obtaining sufficient donor specimens and placing them in storage at the time of first conception using our Vial Buy & Store program. You may return any unused specimens that were purchased at regular prices and have never left the Fairfax Cryobank facility at half the original purchase price. (See our Vial Buy Back program) Also see our donor re-activation policy below.

Donor Re-activation Service:

If a donor has not met his pregnancy limit and/or his unit sales limit, a donor reactivation is possible. See details on donor pregnancy limits. Fairfax Cryobank will attempt to locate and re-activate donors who have left the program and have no additional samples remaining. A donor search fee, donor processing fee, infectious disease testing fee, and specimen storage fee (6 month minimum) is required prior to initiation of the search. All fees, except the search fee, will be refunded if the former donor cannot be located or declines to re-enter the donor program. A successful donor reactivation costs several thousand dollars.

Designated Donor (Known Donor):

A designated, known, or directed donor (DD) is a donor of semen used to inseminate a nonsexually intimate partner. For a more detailed discussion on this available service, including fees, click here. This would include situations where a woman wants to conceive a pregnancy by a man known to her, but rather than having intercourse, chooses to use artificial insemination with his semen, with his full knowledge and consent. In addition, couples using a gestational carrier (GC) are also considered to be using a DD. A GC is a woman who has consented to the implantation of an embryo(s) in her uterus. The GC has no biological link to the transferred embryo(s), and the intent is for her to continue a pregnancy to term for the couple who provided the embryo(s).

Gender Selection:

Fairfax Cryobank's parent company, the Genetics & IVF Institute, includes a division that specializes in gender selection for prevention of X-linked genetic diseases and family balancing. This world-renowned division is called MicroSort. Donor sperm from Fairfax Cryobank is also available for gender selection by MicroSort under certain circumstances. The process is currently in clinical trial and its use by couples requires they meet specific inclusion criteria and sign an informed consent.  To see if you qualify for the MicroSort trial, please visit their website at www.microsort.com or contact their offices at 800-277-6607.
