Fairfax Cryobank strives to offer donor semen to individuals who desire to have additional children by the same donor. However, individuals who wait until the time to conceive a second child may find that the specific donor they desire is no longer available. Therefore we suggest obtaining sufficient donor specimens and placing them in storage at the time of first conception. You may return any unused specimens that were purchased at regular prices and have never left the Fairfax Cryobank facility at half the original purchase price. Also see our donor re-activation policy below.
A designated, known, or directed semen donor (DD) is a donor of semen used to inseminate a non-sexually intimate partner. In one scenario, this donor is known to you and his semen will be used to attempt a pregnancy in you by artificial insemination. Situations using a gestational carrier are also included in DD, where embryos are created by in vitro fertilization using the sperm and eggs of intimate partners but are implanted into a gestational carrier who has no biological link to the embryos. See our Designated (Known) Donor page for more information.
Upon request, Fairfax Cryobank will attempt to locate and re-activate donors who have left the program and have no additional samples remaining. A donor search fee, donor processing fee, infectious disease testing fee, and specimen storage fee (6 month minimum) is required prior to initiation of the search. All fees, except the search fee, will be refunded if the former donor cannot be located or declines to re-enter the donor program. A donor cannot be reactivated if he has already reached his pregnancy or unit sales limit. See our pregnancy limits policy for details.
