Essay Questions

What is your most memorable childhood experience? There are many memories, hard to say the most vivid. One that stands out to me now was how a girl I had a huge crush on in early grade school would usually give me a hard time. One day she told me I would look cute if I gelled my hair up. I remember being elated, but I never liked the N-Sync look, and my pride would not allow me to groom my hair. If only I had been less stubborn!
What immediate family member do you closely identify with and why?My brother has been a big influence on my life. He was doing things on the internet in the 90's far ahead of his time and he got me into computers early. I have a lot to thank him for as far as my professional career goes. He's always been a source of practical advice for me elsewhere as well, and we've always gotten along. I think the gap in our ages created a healthy distance.
What character traits do you admire in an individual?I admire courage, curiosity, discipline, integrated shadow (the Jungian concept), and practicality.
What is the funniest thing ever to happen to you?I once got launched off a Segway and developed an enormous black eye from smacking my face into the pavement. This was moments after being told that it was impossible to fall off a Segway.
If time and money were not an issue, where would you travel and why?I think next on my list will be to explore the Tibetan plateau. It seems like one of the most extreme places on the planet. I am also fascinated by the nomadic herders there and how they can subsist on the animal products of their herd.
When and if you ever have children, what would you like to pass on to them?I hope to pass on the importance of community and their reputation therein. Millennials are a "Hero" generation a la The Fourth Turning by Strauss and Howe. We are destined to incur crisis and will likely be part of creating some sort of stable world for the forthcoming "Artist" generation. This theory resonates with me because I do feel a need to impart the importance of community to my children, whereas we have grown up in the refuse of a wildly individualistic and self-centered epoch leftover from the previous Prophet generation. One must recapture culture from individualistic Malthusian technocrat types and rebuild a world in which community and cultural identity are at the center.
