Essay Questions

What is your most memorable childhood experience? My most memorable childhood experience is going camping with my brothers and father. Learning about the outdoors and enjoying the simple things in life influenced my perspective on how I currently view life. These experiences have given me something to look forward to passing on to my daughter, as I take pride in being able to put all the distractions of the world aside and enjoy focusing on nature.
What immediate family member do you closely identify with and why?I most identify with my middle brother because we enjoy many of the same things and have very similar personalities. We both enjoy physical fitness, and music really brought us closer when we were teenagers. He is always there when I need him and would never hesitate to help me and he knows I would do the same for him.
What character traits do you admire in an individual? The character traits I most admire in an individual are trust, loyalty, and respect. If I can trust a person wholeheartedly I am much more apt to develop a strong relationship with them. Loyalty and respect are values instilled in me by my military experience and something I take great pride in. There is a lot of negativity in the world today, but having close family and friends with the same values gives me great pleasure and a positive outlook on life.
What is the funniest thing ever to happen to you?The funniest thing that has ever happened to me was when I was in officer training for the U.S. Army. It was the first week of training, and being on time for events was of the utmost importance. If we were late, the entire class would face punishment. The first Saturday we had a break from training, but I was still in the mentality of showing up for physical training on time. It was 0500 hours and there I was, standing on the physical training field all by myself, not knowing where anyone was. I then got a phone call from my wife (then my fiancé). She asked where I went and said "I thought we were going to do something fun today because you didn't have class." I went from worried and confused I had missed something, to laughing hysterically at myself.
If time and money were not an issue, where would you travel and why?I would travel to multiple historical locations as I am very intrigued by world history and would love to travel to many of the locations I've only read or learned about over the years. Ancient Rome and Greece would be at the top of my list, because as a civil engineer it is amazing to see the infrastructure that those civilizations were able to build with such limited resources as compared to today.
When and if you ever have children, what would you like to pass on to them?I would like to pass on my passion to take care of others to my daughter. I always put others first and get satisfaction out of seeing others succeed. I hope my daughter has that same passion and does it in her own way. Additionally, I hope she shares my sense of optimism. I seldom let small things bother me and always try to see things in a positive light. I am often complimented on my ability to remain calm and collected in stressful situations and on being able to make clear and sound decisions when another might panic or be pessimistic about the situation.
