Personal Information
Talents:
Voice: | Baritone |
Tell us about your interests/talents and how long you have been pursuing. Provide several. | Singing, 15 years |
Favorite:
Color | Purple |
Food | Blue Crabs; Spicy food lover, the hotter the better! There’s very little I don’t like. |
Music | Eclectic; Metal, Electronic, Pop, Rock, Big on 80s era music/ballads. Wander between many genres, but am an avid listener. |
Animal | Cats and dogs |
Pet | Grew up with a lot of cats, but my favorite pet is my dog Rory, who’s a tri-color Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. My fav dog breed! |
Car | One that works, not too worried about being showy/appearances/features |
Movie | For most media I prefer stories that are hard to predict/buck cookie cutter formats, with a strong preference towards adult/darker themes. Mystery/lack of knowledge of what’s coming is what makes it exciting! Love Sci Fi, Action, Adventure, Mystery, Comedy |
Song | My favorites change over time, but here are some I’m really into right now: 80s: “Home Sweet Home” by Motley Crue; “Paradise City” by Guns N’ Roses; “Altitudes” by Jason Becker; “If You Leave” by OMD Pop: “Hillside Boys” by Kim Petras, “Concrete” by Poppy, “Memories” by Maroon 5; Metal: Beast In Black; Parkway Drive; Arch Enemy; Archspire Electronic: “The Cyber Grind” by Meganeko; Deadlife; Carpenter Brut Rap: Eminem, Bo Burnham (rap?) |
Goals:
Academic | Not planning additional schooling beyond the Masters. Given the state of the internet and resources available to modern society, I tend to see the value of formal education as being more of a credential. Learning is something you can largely do independently these days. It would be fun to spend some time away from work to focus on unsolved technical problems in the realm of comp sci though. I have created some novel graph layout algorithms as part of my work for example, and internalized a pretty rigid theory on the philosophy underlying coding best practices. Also very interested in delving into more theoretical/open problems in economics… economics/economic theory is one of my biggest passions. Specifically macro/monetary policy. |
Professional | I’m fortunate that I’ve been able to achieve most of my “career” oriented professional goals at the age of 31. Financial freedom was my singularly focused goal since I graduated college… not to be able to splurge/buy things, but to have control over my time and be able to pursue my own interests without compromise or being beholden to others. I joined a 10 person Silicon Valley startup, worth close to nothing, around 2013, and stayed with that company through acquisition for $1B in 2020. I put a huge amount of grit and effort into contributing as much as possible, and became one of 3 Directors of Engineering at the company at the age of 27. Beyond putting in the effort, I always strove to do work with the highest quality possible, and form a strong understanding of the philosophy underlying why certain approaches/techniques were better than others. Being a startup, I was involved in so many different things. I was the key hiring manager for close to 100 technical hires, I managed man |
Personal | You could say that one of my hobbies is actually self improvement :) Too many interests to go into full detail, but to name a few: Various gym goals, like improving strength… I’ve been an avid lifter for close to 15 years now; Improving my guitar playing; Improving artistically to assist with branding/marketing/game dev; Learning to program music; Traveling the world, especially Asia… I’m considering spending a year or two in either Japan or Korea |

Awards & Activities
High school | Too long ago to recall, though I did get a few academic awards. I wasn’t as academically focused when in public school, and also wasn’t much one for clubs/school sponsored programs. I preferred to do my own thing. I used to love following the news/current events, following politics, and spent a lot of time gaming for sure. |
College | Similarly, I didn’t do much in the way of school sponsored activities/clubs. I tended to always pursue my own interests, which were on the more self focused/independent side. Despite being very independent, I do have strong people skills as well, which really bloomed once I got into my career. |
Academic | Talents: Self teacher, intrinsically motivated. In my first bout of undergrad, math classes were often graded entirely on exam scores, and not attendance, so I would often go long stretches skipping class and then cram all the material for the exam a few days beforehand. It worked really well most of the time, but there were cases where I didn’t leave enough buffer for self study time and it flopped. I didn’t take academics as seriously for my first set/econ degrees. I’ve always considered myself somewhat of an intellectual, but also very independent and wanting to do things my own way, rather than through a system with constraints defined by other people. When faced with challenges or problems in life, I tend to try to derive my own solutions rather than following the trend, though it’s important of course to use what’s standard as a frame of reference. The second I hit the working world, a switch flipped and I took my career and success much more seriously and aggressively, and put i |
Professional | Not much to say here really. Most of my corporate career has been in the startup I joined shortly after college (later acquired). I came in as an entry level programmer, but rapidly took on more and more responsibilities. Over my ~8 years I’ve written over 1 million lines of code, been the primary hiring manager for dozens of engineers, managed teams, defined architectures for major technological transitions. I was promoted rapidly year after year and have now reached a point where there’s not much further to climb on the mainstream corporate track. Now my goals are much more towards building my own product/company rather than trying to climb further in the traditional corporate path. |
Political | I’ve always followed and been interested in politics and would love to run for Senator or President later on in life, but there are so many variables to consider and challenges to overcome before then. It’s something I’ll revisit later for sure. My politics could be described as very rationally based, prioritizing measurable outcomes and tangible results over emotions. Of course some issues in politics are more morality based than empirical, and there will never be a “right” answer. Distribution of impact of policy matters too. Just because a given policy produces the most “net benefit” to society, there tends to be specific winners and losers. |
Personal | For most of my early years after college I spent the majority of my personal time trying to improve my programming/computer science skillset to aid with my career. After a few years I reached a state where I felt that I had learned a huge amount and the marginal value of extra study was diminishing, and began to focus a lot more time on my investing hobby and trying to understand more in-depth monetary policy, macroeconomics, and the Federal Reserve. Especially after COVID when all of these things went wildly out of whack. Now I’m building a fintech app/product that specializes in income oriented investments, particularly CEFs, BDCs, and REITs, since there’s a huge lack of technology around this investing style. Most current fintech/investment technology has been focused on growth stocks, options trading etc. An opportunity in the market, let’s see! |
Charitable | I’m supportive of the goals of many charities, but I’m not a huge donor at this point in my life. It’s something I plan to do more of in the later years once I have more control over my time. Though it’s important to know the efficiency of charity and true impact of any dollars you donate. |
