| Updates - Family Medical History | No change to profile: March 2021. Update July 2022: Donor was asked if his mother, who had breast cancer at age 58, was tested for the BRCA genes. She was tested and was negative. No change to donor Family Medical History: July 2023. Update September 2025: Donor 5535 recently reported that his sister was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 40 and is being treated with chemotherapy and radiation. He reports that she tested negative for genetic variants in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. It is unknown if she had genetic testing for variants in other cancer predisposition genes. Approximately 90% of cancer cases are sporadic – they are believed to occur when a person has several changes in their genes and various environmental factors that together increase a person’s risk of disease. However, 10% of all cancers areassociated with having a single specific genetic variant in a gene that can be passed down in a family. Genetic changes in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes are just two examples of genes that can have a single specific variant that significantly increases aperson’s risk for cancer. People who have such variants are said to have a hereditary cancer syndrome. Considering his mother was previously reported to have breast cancer at the the age of 58 and his maternal grandmother was diagnosed with an unknown type of cancer in her late fifties that had metastasized, children conceived by this donor may have an increased chance to develop cancer later in life based on his reported family history. The exact chance this may happen is not known. As no genetic variant related to cancer has been identified in the donor’s affected family members, no genetic testing related to this medical update can be conducted on the donor. |
