| Updates - Family Medical History | UPDATE July 2025: Donor conceived child diagnosed with moderate to severe autism and three ventricular septal defects (VSDs). When a half-sibling (i.e., someone conceived from the same sperm source but different egg sources) has been diagnosed with autism, the risk that other half-siblings will develop autism is believed to be 9 to 10%. A child who is meeting developmental milestones and not showing autistic behaviors in their preschool years has a very low chance of having autism. For those with children by this donor, the diagnosis of ASD is worth mentioning to your child’s pediatrician. Without a known etiology, a specific risk for VSDs in other donor conceived people cannot be provided. If isolated, the risk would be less than 1%. A detailed anatomy scan and a fetal echocardiogram are recommended during any pregnancy conceived with the help of this donor. Of note, the reporting CLIENT reports that her son, who was conceived with a DIFFERENT DONOR, was also diagnosed with autism. Her son's genetic test results are extremely unlikely to impact the risk of autism or ventricular septaldefects in children conceived with the help of donor 5883. UPDATE November 2025: Fairfax was notified that a donor-conceived child (male) was recently diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) at the age of 22-month-old by a Developmental Behavioral Pediatrician. Diagnosis was established through parent interview, medical review, direct behavioral observation, and standardized developmental testing assessing gross motor, fine motor, visual perception, adaptive skills, visual-motor problem solving, speech/language, and social communication; delays were noted across all domains except motor skills. Reported symptoms include limited speech, lack of gesture use and imitation, rare eye contact, lack of response to verbal requests, absence of joint attention, minimal interest in social interaction, atypical play, staring spells, frequent inappropriate laughing episodes, and multiple stereotyped/stimming behaviors (spinning, seeking upside-down positioning, hand flapping). No additional health concerns are currently reported. The family has not yet met with a geneticist, and no genetic testing has been completed to date. Though no causative genetic etiology has been linked to this donor, the chance of this condition in other donor conceived children may be higher than the general population risk. |
