Essay Questions

What is your most memorable childhood experience? When I was around 10 years old, I went on a vacation to the mountains of Colorado with my grandfather. The terrain was beautiful and is still one of my favorite places to visit when I get the chance. However, the first time we went was the most special, experiencing a world far bigger than I ever had before. The best part of that trip was spending time with my grandfather though, someone I still believe is one of the wisest people I know, spending that trip learning from him is really what made it so memorable.
What immediate family member do you closely identify with and why?I most closely identify with my younger brother. We have lived side by side for a large portion of my life. He has experienced almost all the things I have, and that makes it incredibly easy to relate with him. As the older sibling, I can make sure he avoids the mistakes that I've made and impart knowledge to set him up for success. He has also absorbed my sense of humor, which always makes talking with him easy and full of laughs.
What character traits do you admire in an individual?Being a problem solver, working hard, having ambitions, and being adventurous are nice, but I believe the most important traits are honesty and virtuousness. I believe if one has good morals and tries to be the best person they can be to themselves and those around them, then everything else will click into place. I think strong bonds are built on these foundational traits, and strong bonds with others will get you further than you could get on your own and leave you with a more fulfilling life.
What is the funniest thing ever to happen to you? It's hard to come up with one event that I can say is the funniest, but a memory that stands out is the day after I finished finals my senior year. A large group of my high school friends and I spent the entire day laughing together. We went and got food, then got completely lost on our way to get dessert afterwards. None of us minded too much that we were lost though, we were just enjoying the moment and having fun. I still keep up with most of them, but it was a big change, going from high school to the real world, so it was nice to have a stress-free day where we just got to laugh and mess around.
If time and money were not an issue, where would you travel and why?If time and money were not an issue, I would like to take a long break somewhere in Europe, like Switzerland, to relax and enjoy the scenery and the culture. I love nature, and finding a place to walk and think while surrounded by trees or the ocean sounds wonderful. I'd also like to experience the culture from such a different place and see how different it is from what I know. Another beautiful place I'd like to experience at some point is Japan and its Sakura and bamboo forests.
When and if you ever have children, what would you like to pass on to them?I'd like to pass on my problem-solving skills to my children, but more importantly I'd like to pass on my morals. I believe critically thinking is an amazing skill which I'd love to see them have, but it doesn't mean much if you don't have a good moral system to back it up. As much as I'd like to see them smart, I'd rather them be happy. If everything goes correctly though, I'll pass on both the skills to understand the world and view it in a positive light.
