Essay Questions

What is your most memorable childhood experience? My family moved from Jamaica to Qatar. The culture shock really made me grow up faster than my peers, but I see the benefits from that now. I went from a third world country with a very open-minded culture, to a strict Muslim country. For example, my mother is Afro-Brazilian, and she wears her out in an afro. Every time we would go out in public, whether that be the mall or just a restaurant, people would look and point. This may not have been out of bad intention but simply because they do not see that often if at all. I still enjoyed living in Qatar because the vibe is so pure, the crime rate is one of the lowest in the world. The thing with me is, everywhere feels like home, the world is my home. I can blend in anywhere. I did not enjoy one place above the other especially because I lived in each at a different period of my life.
What immediate family member do you closely identify with and why?I identify most with my little cousin. We view life very similarly. He’s the closest person I have to a blood brother. I admire his work ethic in the gym and everything he has accomplished at his age. At only 17, he is in the one percent club in powerlifting. Meaning that he is ridiculously strong, and he still has years to mature. We both believe that physical health is crucial to a good life, especially as a man. You should want to push your body to limits and become the best version of yourself. Because even if you are not a professional athlete, I can promise you it will translate over into your life, whether it’s work, love, etc.
What character traits do you admire in an individual?I admire honesty, kindness, perseverance, humor, and calmness. These traits resonate with me because they are not commonly found. Even I struggle with some, but life is about the endless effort we put into becoming the person that we want to be and not succumbing to “evil” or temptations. That’s why I put perseverance in there. I believe honesty in 99 percent of cases, is the best way to go. The truth will set you free. Calmness and kindness go hand in hand because to be kind you have to be calm. A lot of people, especially these days, have a very short fuse. I try to always be as emotionally intelligent as I can for others around me as well as myself.
What is the funniest thing ever to happen to you?I remember one time in high school, I was playing basketball with some friends. Since I didn’t play basketball, I had a friend who was getting frustrated because I was somehow playing good defense and would not let him by. He expressed his frustration and started trying harder which led him to slip on the ball as he was dribbling. His entire body rolled on the ball, and seeing a 6’ 9” man fall like that just broke the entire room into tears. Straight out of a cartoon. I love laughing when I can’t stop laughing.
If time and money were not an issue, where would you travel and why?I’d go to Brazil. Brazil is my original home, where my soul belongs. The food, culture, and combat culture there is undefeated. Although some parts may be dangerous, overall Brazil is the place to be. I would be living my best life, eating clean and training twice a day. With money being no issue, I would be living comfortably over there.
When and if you ever have children, what would you like to pass on to them?I want to pass on generational, physical, and emotional wealth. I believe and see family as a team. We are all on the same team in this life, meaning I will help and set up the future generations of my family as best as I can. Nowadays people may have one but not the other or none at all. I feel as if this is very important and makes a huge difference in quality of life, especially emotional intelligence. As far as physical wealth is concerned, it would most likely be real estate.
