Essay Questions

What is your most memorable childhood experience? My most memorable childhood experience might be visiting my grandfather’s house. I loved the Redwoods, and his retirement home. Also, the beach was a stone’s throw away. Often, we’d hike and sometimes camp.
What immediate family member do you closely identify with and why?I most closely identify with my sister, who is my best friend. My sister and I are the closest in age and attended high school together. Although we weren’t always friends as kids, we’ve grown extremely close as adults and are always in touch. My sister is a very positive force in my life, and we’ve offered each other lots of insight and advice.
What character traits do you admire in an individual?I admire courage, wisdom, and attentiveness. I look for people who are able to step outside of themselves and prioritize the feelings and comfort of others. I admire people who try to show they care through acts of service and planning. I also admire strength, both of will and character.
What is the funniest thing ever to happen to you?My mom got me some athletic sweats for Christmas, to complement my wardrobe and keep me warm. However, I have particular dimensions, as does my brother (to an even greater extent), so sizes on the legs like "medium" and "large" don't really fit us cleanly. Soon after putting on the sweats, I realized that the drawstring that would tighten them around my waist was much, much too long -- comically long. I came downstairs with the drawstring hidden behind the sweats, hanging down on the inside perhaps to my knee. I told my mom I loved them, but there was only one small problem. I then bent over slightly to exaggerate the motion, and slowly pulled the drawstring out in front of me until my arm has straight, it was so long. The face I made and the pose I struck made my mom laugh the hardest I'd ever heard her laugh, and it filled me with joy and mirth on that Christmas evening like I hadn't expected.
If time and money were not an issue, where would you travel and why?I’d go to Greece, Italy, and all over the Mediterranean. I’m very much a foodie and will travel for good food. I also love history and guess why I’d want to go there. I want to experience a very romantic, impressive, and culturally rich travel experience with plenty of venues and time to reflect, especially with excellent wines. And if money were no issue, I’d do lots of extravagant things to boot.
When and if you ever have children, what would you like to pass on to them?I want to pass on confidence in themselves and the attitude that they can tackle most things as long as they set their mind to it. Though I cultivated this trait, I wish I’d had it sooner and been more secure in myself to try important things like dancing. I’d also love to pass on much better dating advice than I got in my formative years.
