Updates - Family Medical HistoryUPDATE April 2026: Fairfax was notified that a child conceived with this donor was born with tongue, lip, and buccal ties. This case is currently under Investigation. Additional information will be added once obtained. UPDATE May 2026: No additional health concerns were reported for the child in the medical update from April 2026. Per report, the tongue tie was fixed at the hospital after birth and the lip and buccal ties were addressed by a pediatric dentist. The report was relayed to Fairfax Cryobank by California Cryobank. As such, all information was obtained secondhand with the inability for further investigation or client interview. Tongue, lip, and buccal ties, otherwise known as tethered oral tissues (TOTs), are bands of tissues that can restrict the movement of the tongue, lips, or cheeks. When necessary, a frenectomy is used to correct these conditions. This is a quick and minimally invasive oral surgical procedure to remove excess tissue. The underlying cause of TOTs is unknown, though many primary causes and factors can increase the chance of occurrence. TOTs may run in families, suggesting a possible genetic link, and in some cases could be related to how much space a baby has in the womb during development. TOTs can be an isolated finding, meaning that they are the only health concern a child has, or can sometimes be associated with a genetic condition. Without knowing the underlying cause, a chance for occurrence in other donor conceived children remains unknown. UPDATE May 2026: Fairfax was notified that another child conceived with this donor's sperm was born with tongue and lip ties. The child is also reported to have a sacral dimple. No additional concerns were reported for the child. The chance of occurrence in other children conceived with the help of this donor may be increased.
