What is your most memorable childhood experience?Going to Haiti to visit family for the first time stands out as a memorable experience. I remember touching down, sleeping outside and seeing the sky full of stars, more stars than I have ever seen before. I also vividly remember walking everywhere from the city to the countryside.
What immediate family member do you closely identify with and why?I identify most with my younger and older sister. I didn’t get a chance to be as close with my oldest due to the age gap. She had to grow up quickly in our household.
What character traits do you admire in an individual?How do they treat people? It can be anyone, a homeless person, a service worker, and a president of a company. Those that are kindhearted to everyone regardless of what they may have or bring tells a lot about someone.
What is the funniest thing ever to happen to you?Growing up in a fully Haitian American household and growing up with Spanish speaking friends, I didn’t know how to speak English until 4-5 years old. Now my family will tell you I can’t stop talking and wish I’d go back to being the quiet kid I was because I didn’t know the language.
If time and money were not an issue, where would you travel and why?I’d like to visit Europe and Japan. I really admire history and want to see the buildings and valleys that have withstood the test of time. A lot of places in the US have been withered with the passing years and you'd be lucky to find something that has existed since the mid-1900s let alone something that has been around for nearly thousands of years in those other countries.
When and if you ever have children, what would you like to pass on to them?I hope that I can pass on my optimism. I can stress out about some things, but in the midst of it all I can always see the positivity. Maybe we are going through some tough times right now, but what is the lesson that we can learn from this so that we can better prepare ourselves and others to help them get through it. I try to be kindhearted and positive all through the day and I hope that I can pass something good to them.
