Essay Questions

What is your most memorable childhood experience?I often had crafting and little garage projects with my dad. My most memorable project was a go-kart we built with a trash can, a power drill, a furniture dolly, and an old bike! The go-kart worked surprisingly well, but we never figured out how to get it to steer or stop, so my dad just had to chase after me.
What immediate family member do you closely identify with and why?I closely identify with my sister, as we have a lot in common in terms of interests. We both love to travel, try new foods, and find new exciting experiences. I always make sure to visit her (especially since she lives abroad). Regardless of how long it is between visits, it's like we never parted!
What character traits do you admire in an individual?I most admire someone's grit, intelligence, positive attitude, humor, curiosity, and creativity. I strongly believe that while not everything is in your control, your reaction to the things that life throws at you is entirely your choice. I admired my parents grit as immigrants and the way they found the positives in every situation. Adopting their overall attitude, resourcefulness, and perspectives on life have led to success in my own career, relationships, and overall well-being.
What is the funniest thing ever to happen to you?In college we secretly stole our rivals’ mascot, a live goat. We transported him in a van and kept him in one of the dorms. We secured funds for goat feed until we could parade him around the campus. As revenge, they snuck into my dorm to transport and set up all of my furniture outdoors in the exact same setup as it was indoors. I did my homework and slept outside that night.
If time and money were not an issue, where would you travel and why?As a history enthusiast, I would follow the route of E Company, 101st Airborne Division from the Band of Brothers during WWII. I would start my trip by parachuting into Normandy, France and visit every landmark, museum, tourist attraction, restaurant, and probably also nightclubs until I arrived at the Eagle's Nest in Berchtesgaden.
When and if you ever have children, what would you like to pass on to them?I would like to pass on the same qualities that my parents passed to me - grit, a positive attitude, endless curiosity for life, and a strong work ethic. I would also pass on our family recipes and our Chinese traditions. I would teach them to ski, cook, woodwork, play tennis, and Taekwondo.
