Essay Questions

What is your most memorable childhood experience? My most memorable childhood experience happened when my family moved when I was in 6th grade. It was during the summer, so my dad drove me and my siblings on a weeklong road trip to our new home. It was the longest road trip I'd ever been on, and we stopped at a lot of cool national parks and roadside attractions. It was also a time filled with fear and excitement about the unknown, and the sadness of uprooting our lives. This trip marked a big transition in my life.
What immediate family member do you closely identify with and why?I am closest to my younger sister. Both of us share a love of board games and have a similar competitive drive. We're also both athletic and enjoy playing volleyball or rock climbing together. My sister and I are able to understand each other really well as a result of our shared upbringing.
What character traits do you admire in an individual?I really value honesty in people above any other trait and try to surround myself with people who say what they mean, and mean what they say. Conversely, I can't trust or spend time with someone who I find fundamentally dishonest, or who clearly has ulterior motives. True honesty requires a great deal of emotional maturity, which is another trait I admire.
What is the funniest thing ever to happen to you? When I was 9 or 10 years old, I went mini golfing with my family on a fall weekend. On the very last hole, after the others had already finished, I hit my ball and overshot the hole. Since the hole was on a small hill, and I had hit the ball way too hard, I got some air on my shot, and the ball hit my brother's forehead, bounced back into the green, and straight into the hole for a hole-in-one. This insane trick shot is the funniest and most unlikely thing that's ever happened to me.
If time and money were not an issue, where would you travel and why?I would go to Hungary and visit my grandmother. My family used to visit her almost every year, but it's harder to find time and money to do so as an adult. Some of my best memories are from summers spent in her home as a kid, playing in the garden and eating the best food ever.
When and if you ever have children, what would you like to pass on to them?If I were to have children, I think what I would most like to pass on to them is lifelong curiosity. For me, curiosity was the gateway to developing empathy for others and understanding how the world works. If that curiosity leads them to answers that are not satisfying, they can keep looking for other answers or take actions to change that situation.
