Essay Questions

What is your most memorable childhood experience? My most memorable childhood experience involved my jealousy of my older brothers. They shared a room, while my younger brother and I shared another one. One night, I decided to hide in their room before bedtime to hear all the cool stuff that older brothers talk about with each other. I hid behind their bed and soon they were talking about why I was the worst child and how my parents didn't love me; in fact, they went on to say I was adopted. I stormed from the room crying to my mom and I realized that I was not very good at hiding from my brothers. They had seen me and made up that story just to torment me. Of course it worked.
What immediate family member do you closely identify with and why?I identify most closely with my oldest brother. He is a prime example of the brother you want to look up to. He's probably the most likable person I know. I've never heard anyone say something bad about him. Teachers and classmates alike always raved about him. I identify with him the most because I am always striving to be like that. I want to be the person that everyone looks up to and depends on just like him.
What character traits do you admire in an individual?I admire brutal honesty. The kind of people that will say what they want to say even if they know it may anger someone else. These are the kinds of people that have firm beliefs and don't care very much what other people think of them. They aren't afraid to get into arguments and often these are the people we need around us to hear what people actually think about us.
What is the funniest thing ever to happen to you?The funniest thing that ever happened to me was during Halloween of a recent year. It was a hurricane and my friend had the idea to go streaking. So we went outside to the street which surrounds the football field on campus. But once we are about to start, he backs out and it's just me. Now, the problem is that there were girls around and pride wouldn't let me back down. So I did it all the way around the football field in the freezing rain and howling wind. One of my stupidest decisions, but also probably the funniest story I have.
If time and money were not an issue, where would you travel and why?I've always wanted to travel throughout Ireland. Not only because I have family there but because it seems like a much simpler country. Sometimes I get so tired of the technology surrounding us and how impersonal we are. It's hard to have a conversation with someone without seeing their phone, for example.
When and if you ever have children, what would you like to pass on to them?I would like to pass on a love of physical activity and sports as well as reading. These are things I think are becoming increasingly lost among today's children. Many parents constantly hover around their children making sure they won't make the same mistakes they made. I'm old enough to realize that the best way I learn something is from doing it wrong. I want to pass on to a child the ability to be a child and make mistakes and learn from them.
