Essay Questions

What is your most memorable childhood experience?I used to walk around in the woods behind my family's house. I'd just gather my dogs and go as far as I could before the sun would start to set. One day I walked to the edge of a very frightening cypress swamp and I saw an alligator in the water looking at me. I stared at it for a few minutes and then it moved a little and I ran home as fast as I could.
What immediate family member do you closely identify with and why?I feel equal parts my mother and father. I put a lot of thought into this, but I really can't decide on one or the other. From my dad, I got a desire for leaving behind things that are familiar and comfortable. From my mom, I inherited a love of quiet and an appreciation of solitude.
What character traits do you admire in an individual?I like when people don't take themselves too seriously.
What is the funniest thing ever to happen to you?For my bachelor party my friends dressed me up like Uncle Sam and took me to all the local historical sites that I'd been trying to get them to visit with me.
If time and money were not an issue, where would you travel and why?Africa. I went to Marrakesh, Morocco a few years ago and it was so different from anywhere I've ever been. I realized how little I knew about this massive continent. I explored the city for five days trying to map it out for myself, but I couldn't. I'd gone so far out of my comfort zone that when I came back I felt like a new person. At some point in the near future I'd like to take a month off, fly to Johannesburg (where I have some friends) and work my way north until I flew out of either Addis Ababa or Dakar.
When and if you ever have children, what would you like to pass on to them?A love of reading and traveling.
