Essay Questions

What is your most memorable childhood experience?During my childhood, I went on a trip to Michigan with some of my family members in order to meet with some more family. This trip was memorable because we ended up driving to Michigan, which in total put the driving time at about twenty-four hours. However, once I got there it was fun. The thing that made this trip really memorable is all of the activities that we did in the area around Lake Michigan. We went kayaking, hiking, rock climbing, and then jumping into the lake from the cliffs we climbed. The kayaking was good because we went way out onto the lake and then just jumped off of our boats into the water to try and touch the bottom. After a couple of tries we could all pretty much reach the bottom and we had a competition to see who could bring up the biggest rock, I lost. The hiking was not as fun since we had forgotten our shoes and ended up hiking through the sand as it burned our feet. The sweetest relief came when we finally got to the water's edge and then sprinted down a dune to jump into the water. I was there for around a week and then I had to return home. This meant another long car ride, but this time we booked a hotel room halfway through so that way we could rest a little during the trip. All of the good and bad experiences are what made this trip really memorable.
What immediate family member do you closely identify with and why?The family member that I associate the most with is my father. I feel a closeness to him for a couple of reasons. The primary reason that I closely associate with my dad is that he has had a big impact in shaping how I have grown up. He used to be a Marine and because of this, he has a certain set of values that he has been able to instill into me. For the most part it has been the ideals of hard work and honesty, but he has still been able to teach me other things as well. Through teaching me a lot, he has influenced my character to a great degree, and because of this, I feel like I relate to him the most out of my immediate family members. This extends beyond common ideologies and it shows with similar senses of humor as well as similar political views. There are some differences between us as well. He really enjoys working on things around the house and being a handyman, but I do not really see why he enjoys the labor so much. Another difference is that he seems to take a lot of things much more seriously than I do, so I am a lot more laid back than he is. Overall I share more similarities with my father than differences, and the primary reason for this is because he has been such a huge influence on my life that I cannot help but to relate to him to such a degree.
What character traits do you admire in an individual?Funny, intelligent, and confident.
What is the funniest thing ever to happen to you?Once, as a pledge task for my fraternity, me and my friends had to go and talk to girls. What would happen was one of us would go and talk to somebody and whenever one of us got someone's number, the rest of us would come out clapping, playing music, and bring some flowers. It was a lot of fun and some of the girls' reactions were pretty funny.
If time and money were not an issue, where would you travel and why?If I could travel anywhere in the world I would travel across various countries in Europe. Europe has always been a good place for tourism, and since time and money are not a concern, I should be able to travel all I want and see everything it has to offer. In Britain, I could see the Harry Potter World as well as the royal palace. In Paris I could see the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre. In Italy, the Leaning Tower. The point is that Europe has a lot to offer to tourists across its various countries and various landmarks. Another reason is the climate, since Europe is farther north, the climate would be more agreeable. Another reason is that it would be nice to see how the cultures vary from country to country and with them, the people. One drawback of visiting multiple countries across Europe is the language barriers that exist between the neighboring countries. However, since English is spoken throughout the world, and definitely in Europe, it should not be too hard for people to grasp the basic understanding of what I am trying to say. This would take away some of the greatness of the trip since I will not be able to fully immerse myself in the culture, but overall I think that the various countries across Europe would be a fantastic place to go and visit.
When and if you ever have children, what would you like to pass on to them?If I ever have children I would like to pass on some pieces of myself to them. The two main traits that I would like to pass on to them are hard work and honesty. I chose these two because I believe that these two traits are what define a good person. Since I would like my child to become a good person, I believe that these two ideals should be seen as the main pillars that set the foundation for what a person should be. I would also like them to be intelligent since intelligence is paramount in determining the future of the children, and in addition to intelligence, the children should also have a friendly personality. Since intelligence is mostly inherent and a personality is hard to change, I would not be able to change these as much as I would like. However, I would like my children to possess both of these traits. Some things that I would not like to pass on to them are things such as a tendency to procrastinate and a sense of stubbornness. I possess both of these traits and they do not seem that severe, but I would like to have my children avoid them as much as possible. Out of the two stubbornness is the one that can be interpreted as a positive attribute depending on the situation, but most of the time the reluctance to budge on an issue results in a form of ignorance and I would like a child to be accepting of the ideas of others.
