Essay Questions

What is your most memorable childhood experience?I attended a summer nature camp when I was young. The camp had a naturalist who taught the kids about the forests, streams, and wildlife in addition to early settlers' lives. This was my favorite place to be. I still remember crossing the "roly poly bridge" and finding turtle eggs at the camp. In retrospect, the summers I attended camp were likely also some of the most influential experiences on my later school, career, and life choices.
What immediate family member do you closely identify with and why?I identify with one of my brothers. We are both interested in computer programming, so we share something in common. We are also both interested in philosophy, so we have meaningful conversations when we get together.
What character traits do you admire in an individual?I admire honesty, integrity, and intelligence. I'm a teacher, and unfortunately I see a lot of students try to cheat. I like to encourage them to learn in different ways so they can be honest and maintain their integrity. It is my belief that anyone can be intelligent; it just takes a different amount of work for different people. Demonstrating these character traits shows that a person cares about themselves and others around them.
What is the funniest thing ever to happen to you?In grade school, I recall a gym class in which we were playing basketball. I made a shot that very slowly rolled around the rim of the basket about five times before going in. The whole time, everyone was just staring. I wasn't interested in sports even though I was athletic outside of school (fencing, karate) so they were shocked that I made a trick shot like that!
If time and money were not an issue, where would you travel and why?I enjoy travelling to remote locations away from big cities. It's nice to be in a healthier environment and to enjoy the tranquility of nature, so a location in the mountains near a gentle waterfall would be fantastic.
When and if you ever have children, what would you like to pass on to them?My intelligence and health. I have performed quite well academically, and I have been extremely healthy my whole life. I would like for my children to have those two things so they have opportunities available to them. I would also pass on what knowledge and advice I have to offer. One lesson I would like to pass on is for my children to enjoy life and take care of themselves.
