What is Quarantine and Donor Status?
Read more about sperm donor status and the quarantine period that may affect a sperm donor’s vial availability.
There are many factors to consider when finding your sperm donor. Aside from personal characteristics, donor status and availability depending on vials in quarantine will also be an influence in your decision towards choosing your donor.
What is quarantine?
The FDA requires that we hold (quarantine) all donor specimens for six months before they can be released. This allows us to test donors for infectious diseases both before and after they provide their specimens. At the end of the six-month period, we re-test the donor for infectious diseases including HIV-1, HIV-2, HTLV-I & II, hepatitis B surface antigen, hepatitis C, syphilis (RPR), CMV, Neisseria gonorrhea, and Chlamydia trachomatis. A donor’s vials will only be released for sale if all infectious disease testing is negative.
Donor Status
“Active” means that the donor has available vials now and/or we expect availability in the future. “Inactive” means that the donor does not have available vials now and we do not expect availability in the future. Because donor availability can fluctuate over time, Fairfax Cryobank recommends planning ahead and securing your donor vials when they are available so that you do not miss out on your preferred donor.
