Pregnancy and Parenting Resources for the LGBTQ+ Community

June 10, 2022

Check out these resources to help support you through the LGBTQ+ pregnancy and parenting journey!

June is Pride Month, which is a time to explore and celebrate the richness of the LGBTQ+ community. It takes a village to raise a child, as the saying goes, and for LGBTQ+ folks on parenthood journeys, finding pregnancy and parenting resources that are for the community, by the community is a great way to find and build that village.

Here, we’ve curated a list of organizations and content to support and inform you and your family through pregnancy and parenting.

Fertility, pregnancy, and perinatal resources

Resolve New England provides infertility support to all families, with high-level literacy in the specific needs and concerns of LGBTQ+ people. Offering support, education, and advocacy, Resolve facilitates more than twenty virtual support groups for a wealth of subtopics within the fertility landscape and publishes a blog and magazine that speak to the infertility community.

The Ultimate Guide to Pregnancy for Lesbians, written by a marriage and family therapist who specializes in work with the LGBTQ+ community, is a wonderful guide to all things pregnancy, starting with fertility and getting pregnant and continuing through the gestation process. The book’s tone is friendly and approachable, and author Rachel Pepper speaks directly to the specific concerns of lesbian moms.

Located in the Bay Area, the LGBTQ Perinatal Wellness Center is a collective of wellness providers including therapists, doulas, bodyworkers, midwives, lactation consultants, and much more who offer private services as well as community classes and events.

The Instagram account @lgbtqbirth is a free and comprehensive resource and community for birth education and connection in the queer community. Read interviews, connect with Zoom groups, and connect with local providers through their resource network.

The Canadian LGBT2SQ Parenting and Family Resources Program is a rich source of parenting, fertility, and family planning information and workshops. Upcoming Zoom workshop topics include fertility, using donor sperm and/or eggs, surrogacy, and adoption.

As a proudly LGBTQ+ affirming sperm bank, Fairfax Cryobank has been working with families of all genders for many years. When you’re seeking a donor, having a team that serves and celebrates your family is of utmost importance, and the Fairfax team does exactly that.

Family Equality’s Path2Parenthood program is a hub of educational materials for LGBTQ+ people who are considering parenthood. Their site hosts a glossary of family building terms, which can be super helpful as you’re learning about the fertility landscape and trying to keep track of IVF, IUI, ICSI, and more. Of particular interest to people who are pursuing assisted reproductive technology is their list of family building grants, which can be used toward ARC and/or adoption. Family Equality also has a comprehensive family law guide, created in concert with their policy team and available in their Resource Library.

Parenting resources

The Two Moms Podcast is real talk about lesbian parenting, from fertility and trying to conceive into parenthood. Parenting can be lonely—even though you are rarely alone—and finding mom friends (even virtual ones) helps. Funny, sincere, and relentlessly real, co-hosts Maarit and Kristin share their experiences with donors, IUI, sperm banks, and much more.

Family Equality’s Books for Parents and Children, a repository of LGBTQ+ books for all ages, is an amazing resource to use as you build your family’s library. Explore titles like A Family is a Family is a Family and A Tale of Two Mommies in their online Book Nook.

The Mombian Blog, which has been running since 2005, is full of fun and informative materials to support lesbian parenting, like “What Kids Call Their LGBTQ Parents” and more. The site also hosts a database of LGBTQ+ family books and media, with everything from board books on up.

Gender is complex, and Gender Spectrum offers supportive resources, programs, and info for parents and young people as they navigate and celebrate the many nuances of gender identity. The site is geared toward both parents and young people, providing gender sensitive and inclusive materials for children, teens, and the people who care for them.

LGBT Mummies is a UK based organization built to educate, support, and advocate for LGBTQ+ families. Their goal is to provide a safe space for a global community of those struggling to navigate their journey to parenthood. LGBT Mummies also continues to fight and represent the LGBTQ+ community by engaging with the NHS and other organizations to encourage policy change.
